Emotional Intelligence

How can we define emotional Intelligence? What are its educational implications? How it helps students and people (in general) in their lives?

One of the definition I've read about emotional intelligence (EQ) is by Freedman et al. He says:  "Emotional Intelligence is a way of recognizing, understanding, and choosing how we think, feel, and act. It shapes our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. It defines how and what we learn; it allows us to set priorities; it determines the majority of our daily actions. Research suggests it is responsible for as much as 80% of the "success" in our lives."
--From Handle With Care: Emotional Intelligence Activity Book

Emotional intelligence is the capacity to blend thinking and feeling to make optimal decisions — which is key to having a successful relationship with yourself and others.

Studies proved that the students who score high on emotional intelligence specifically in the areas of interpersonal skills, intrapersonal skills, adaptability, general moods, and stress management skills tend to have good academic performance as compared to those who score low on these scales. However, comparison of both genders on academic performance revealed no significant differences.

Teaching emotional intelligence has become a necessary task in education arena and most parents and teachers consider mastery of these skills is a priority in the socioemotional and personal development of their children and puplis. However there are many ways to pursue this. Teaching these skills depends on giving priority to practice, training and improvement and not so much on verbal instructions.

EQ improves people's work and affects them positively.

.

Emotions: do they run your life?

What are emotions? What is their purpose? Many people would like to get rid of them because all they do is to cause them trouble. If you are in that category you need to keep reading.

Emotions are a full-system response compromising a variety of factors and experiences, and they include bodily sensations, and your thoughts.

Have you ever noticed that when you are emotional you have certain thoughts associated with that emotion? For example, if you are angry, you might think that you hate someone. You might have thoughts such as “this is not fair,” or “I am in danger.” And there is also a physiological component to emotions such as tears, blood rush, or sweat and shaking.

Emotions have a reason to be. They prompt us for action, they motivate us, help us communicate with others, and give us important information about what’s going on in a given situation. But like anything else in life if misused or out of balance it can cause trouble. In that is the case, emotions sometimes can lead us to ineffective behaviors. If your emotions make you do things that you regret later and they are causing you trouble in different areas of your life, you need to learn to control them.

Try to follow the next steps and as always practice, practice and practice.

  • Learn about your emotions. What are the feelings that you experience the most and in what situations.

  • Keep in mind that emotions don’t last forever. The intensity can vary from person to person, and situation to situation. Tell yourself “This too shall pass.”

  • Watch the Emotion instead of trying to get rid of it. As soon as you watch the emotion, you separate yourself from it, therefore it can’t take over you and quickly disappears.

  • Accept that life is made of positive and negative emotions that won’t last forever. Just as there is night and day, there is sadness and happiness.

  • Most importantly, don’t be afraid of your emotions. They are part of you and your identity and they help you be alive. Embrace them and learn to love yourself with everything that you are and feel.

  • Don’t judge yourself about what you feel or act on your feelings; just learn to differentiate between feeling and acting on it and your life will be better.

Teacher Quotes

Teaching creates all other professions. ~Author Unknown

If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job. ~Donald D. Quinn

A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron. ~Horace Mann

Most teachers have little control over school policy or curriculum or choice of texts or special placement of students, but most have a great deal of autonomy inside the classroom. To a degree shared by only a few other occupations, such as police work, public education rests precariously on the skill and virtue of the people at the bottom of the institutional pyramid. ~Tracy Kidder

A teacher's purpose is not to create students in his own image, but to develop students who can create their own image. ~Author Unknown

What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches. ~Karl Menninger

Teaching should be full of ideas instead of stuffed with facts. ~Author Unknown

Teaching is the only major occupation of man for which we have not yet developed tools that make an average person capable of competence and performance. In teaching we rely on the "naturals," the ones who somehow know how to teach. ~Peter Drucker

Thank You GOD

Thank you God for everything, the Bad before the Good... Thank you for the lovely Family I have and all the things you put in me, for my past, my present and my future... "Thank you" or as we used to say "Al7amdullelah" for making me this way and I do believe that you'll make me a better person one day..

For all my friends, be thankful for God, he gave us lots of things that others do not have and he did not gave us some because he wanted us to feel the pain others are feeling and work harder and struggle to get what we need.. so never forget that magic word that is "Alhamdullelah".
